Nepal-China trade resumes through Korala border checkpoint

MUSTANG: Trade between Nepal and China has resumed through the Korala border checkpoint in Mustang after a devastating flood in Bhotekoshi on August 26 forced the closure of the Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong crossing.

Before the disaster, an average of eight to 10 containers passed through Korala each day. However, container movement along the route has increased significantly since the disruption.

According to the Armed Police Force (APF) No. 33 Company Headquarters in Jomsom, 252 empty containers travelled towards Korala via the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road between August 26 and September 3.

APF Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Koirala said freight arriving from China completed customs clearance at the Mustang Customs Office before departing for its final destinations.

“Following the disruption at the Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong border crossing, containers that were supposed to enter Nepal through that route have been diverted to Korala,” DSP Koirala said.

However, Mustang Customs Chief Bidur Chudal said cargo diverted from Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong to Korala had not yet arrived.
